You Can't Bloom if You Don't Stand in the Rain

“Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.” Hosea 6:3

I have said the same prayer so much that I have it memorized. It's a simple prayer: "God, move in my life. Give me the opportunities I need to do what you want me to do." Every time I've prayed it, I've meant every word. And I still pray it, because I believe it.

When God began to move in my life and when those opportunities came, I wanted to be excited. And I was—in the beginning. I always knew that it wouldn’t be easy. I thought I was prepared for that, but the more God moved, the more things changed, and the more new opportunities came, the more overwhelmed I got.

I prayed for rain, but when the rain came, I wanted to run and hide.

Not every place God leads us is comfortable. It is never easy to step out into something you don’t know. It’s then that our natural instincts lead us to fear and worry. Those instincts try to protect us, but really, they are just holding us back.

But being uncomfortable was not my biggest fear. I could step out of my comfort zone. If it meant that I would be doing what God wanted me to, I could do it. No, that’s not the reason I became overwhelmed.

I became overwhelmed not because I was afraid of what I had to do, but because I was afraid of not getting to do what I wanted to.

I had to remind myself that God only has the best planned for me. What He has planned for me is better than anything I could ever imagine for myself. But I would never reach that if I didn’t receive what He had to give me right now.

When God chooses to move, we have to choose to move with Him.

It is easy to get overwhelmed by the things God does. God's power is beyond our comprehension, and so are some of His plans. It may seem impossible how God is going to work everything out, but He is a God who has a habit of doing the impossible. And even when we don’t fully understand, God has only the best planned for us.

And we don’t have to be overwhelmed because we aren’t meant to handle it alone. God doesn’t leave us—ever.

If you ever feel overwhelmed by what God is doing, it’s okay. Wherever He is moving in your life, whatever He is doing, trust Him. Don’t run back to what is comfortable or familiar and miss out on all the things He wants to show you. Stand in the rain and take it all in. Rain means God is ready for you to grow. He's ready to take you somewhere new.

Don't be afraid of the rain. You can't bloom without it.
