I'm Not Taking That Great Advice

This isn’t the greatest feeling in the world. I’m pretty sure they think I’m crazy. I don’t completely understand what I’m thinking, but I know it feels right. Maybe that’s not the greatest excuse, but it’s the one I’ve got. Sure, it’s great advice—just not for me.

Sometimes when I get advice, I wonder if people don’t know me at all or if they know me too well. It’s most confusing when you get great advice, but it’s just not for you. Maybe you have a better idea, or perhaps you want to do something out of the ordinary. Certain people follow the guidelines or the typical steps. That is great! And some people prefer to try over and over to do something a way that never has been done before. The results are the same, but the steps aren’t. And that’s okay!

The amount of great advice I’ve turned down makes me sad. I wish it would work for me. It would be a lot easier if it would, but it just won’t. Can I be a hundred percent sure? Not always. You can’t always trust your instincts, and sometimes it might be a mistake not taking the great advice. But you shouldn’t take the advice simply because it’s great advice. What works for someone else might not work for you. You are unique, so embrace that. That advice may not work for you, and that’s okay. Figure out what will work for you.

But if something won’t work for you right now, that doesn’t mean it can’t benefit you in the future. I have a ton of excellent advice that I keep in the back of my mind to use when the time calls for it. It may not fit into your life right now, but good advice is worth saving for a rainy day.

And finally, don’t be afraid to try it because of the chance of failure. There is always a chance of failure. So if the fear of failure is your reason, it’s not a good enough reason. But if you have a better idea, don’t be afraid to take a chance. Saying no to the great advice you don’t want to use is okay. Sometimes you just have to do it differently.

"Be true to yourself, stay focused and stay you, take advice from other folks, use what you can, but never mind what is not for you. For the most part, trust yourself and believe in what you are doing."
